Because of Her - We Can
The theme for 2018 has inspired QPS to seek out strong Aboriginal women who shared their success stories. They spoke about the women who inspired them. This has caused us all to think about the 'mums in our lives'.
Abby Cubillo was a guest in the school on Thursday 26 July. She shared her wonderful successes in basketball and life at the 'Mum and Me' morning tea. Many mums, aunties, nans and grandmothers visited classrooms to participate in yarning circles and NAIDOC activities. They moved to the hall to listen to Abby and have a cup of tea. It was a very special occasion to have so many women from the school community gathered together.
Mia Foster-Britton and Jayden Barratt, both Year 5 Aboriginal students and SRC representatives, extended an Acknowledgement of Country and welcomed Abby to the school.
Kindergarten Red students were joined by their mums, aunties and grandmothers in the classroom. They created ‘trees of life’ to symbolise ‘Mothers’ who create, sustain and nurture life. The students were also inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ deep connection and respect for the land and waters. They used their thumb prints to create the red leaves, with the assistance of the special women in their lives.
